The Seven Hills School, The Donovan Arts Center
Cincinnati, Ohio
The Donovan Arts Center responds to the need at The Seven Hills School for a facility dedicated to the exploration and presentation of the creative arts, a distinguishing characteristic of the school’s curriculum. Thus arose two challenges:
-To design a creative environment distinct from the academic facilities on the campus.
-To create a structure filled with large-scale performance spaces that would not overwhelm the surrounding smaller-scale buildings.
The two-story structure was constructed into a hillside, reducing the impact of the scale on the site while reflecting two different impressions. When viewed from outside the campus, the facility stands as a majestic display of the school’s arts emphasis. From the other side of the building, which bears the entrance, it appears to be one-story, providing a softer, inviting look.
The facility incorporates both performance and learning environments. The main entrance opens into a stunning lobby that leads to a black-box theater, a seminar room and a green room for performers. The lower level features visual-arts studios, drama classrooms, and choral and instrumental music facilities with built-in recording equipment. The Donovan Arts Center provides the space and resources needed to enrich the curriculum and encourage excellence.
