The Packer Collegiate Institute
Brooklyn, New York
The Packer Collegiate Institute is a renowned K-12 independent school on a half-acre historic campus in Brooklyn, N.Y. Packer engaged the architect to carry out a master plan to renovate the common areas, upper school and lower school classrooms, science wing, and administrative offices, and to add an 1,800-square-foot multipurpose mezzanine to the middle school.
Goals for the school included restoring the most visible elements of the unique sense of place of Packer’s Victorian campus while incorporating state-of-the-art technology and energy-efficient lighting.
New glass lobby doors to the garden reestablish a connection to the outdoors and bring natural light to the historic hall. The new entrance to each floor of the science wing opened a view to multimedia science exhibits designed by the architect.
A campus wayfinding system was established through the restoration of the building’s historical details, complemented by a strategic use of color, wall graphics and signage that incorporate imagery meaningful to Packer.
Throughout the school one can perceive that tradition is cherished in a vital place of 21st-century learning.
