With disorders of the lumbar and cervical spine affecting as many as 80 percent of adults in the United States and costing more than $100 billion a year, Dr. William Marras and his team of researchers for the Spine Research Institute (SRI) at The Ohio State University selected Legat & Kingscott to design a flexible and open facility that reflects the technology used visually throughout the space. The new space tripled in size to accommodate multiple video motion capture labs, visually connected to a high-tech conference room and supported by research and collaborative areas.
The layout and flow of the design was derived from the brain and spinal column as it relates to SRI’s mission “to systematically improve the state of spine disorder prevention, evaluation and treatment techniques, which is accomplished through evidence-based research and the development of platform technologies.” The focal point of SRI’s lobby is the video motion capture lab, which consists of 36 cameras and a unique structure that is designed to be flexible enough to perform any study imaginable.
