Texas A&M University, Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park
College Station, Texas
The 125,725-square-foot Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park is a state-of-the-art baseball facility that is home to the Texas A&M University baseball program. Funds were raised to give the outdated facility the major facelift that it needed. The project began in June 2011, and the field reopened on opening day, Feb. 17, 2012.
Texas A&M University former students and Blue Bell Creameries executives Ed and Howard Kruse of Brenham, along with Blue Bell Creameries, pledged $7 million for the renovation and expansion of Olsen Field. With additional campaign commitments of more than $15 million and the sale of seats and suites, the university completed all phases of the $24 million renovation and expansion of the baseball stadium.
The improvements include the construction of the two-story Bill Byrne Student-Athlete Center, home to a new locker room, players lounge, coaches’ offices, and training and weight facilities. New club seating, concession stands, restrooms and the widening of the concourse are just a few of the major renovations on the project.
Olsen Field also received a dramatic exterior facelift. Grassy berm seating was added along the first and third baselines; an antique brick facade, reminiscent of baseball stadiums in the 1930s, was built; and many fan and family amenities were added as part of the upgrade.
The design team was asked to concentrate on making Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park environmentally friendly. All lighting throughout the park is controlled by sensors, and HVAC units only run when rooms are occupied and in high-efficiency modes.
The renovation and expansion of Olsen Field combined state-of-the-art facilities and the most passionate and enthusiastic collegiate baseball fan atmosphere in the country.
