Texas A&M–Commerce,The Music Building
Commerce, Texas
Responding to the rise in music majors, Texas A&M University – Commerce constructed a 69,500 SF state-of-the-art music building with rehearsal spaces for choral, band and percussion instruments and an 80-seat recital hall.
The focal point of the facility is the 550-seat concert hall that supports all music disciplines and strengthens community outreach. Although the building’s focus is the concert hall and performance spaces, the instructional areas reflect the true heart of the program. In addition to four rehearsal halls, the faculty offices serve as private studios for one-on-one instruction. These spaces require the same level of acoustical separation as the practice rooms and rehearsal halls. The new facility adds much-needed space for student practice, faculty studios, keyboard labs, and classrooms.
The overall design reflects the aesthetic and materials of musical instruments, while acting as a campus gateway. A two-story, light-filled lobby provides access to both performance spaces and serves as a reception space. The Music Building is a landmark that raises the stature of the department for both performance and music education.
