Susquehanna University, The Hawk’s Nest
Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania
The Hawk’s Nest is a major social hub of the Susquehanna University campus. In response to students’ concerns over increased food-service traffic, the university planned an expansion of the center’s retail servery. With limited funding and a strong desire to get it right, the university engaged more than 500 students through face-to-face dialog and learned that the project could achieve much more. Through a holistic approach, the renovation improved additional areas beyond the servery and became a vehicle for student development in the process.
The expanded servery provided a new layout, a greater variety of menu choices, and a range of seating options. Reconfiguration of the adjacent bookstore created more seamless visual interaction with the corridor. Relocating a previously isolated performance venue to a more accessible area gave more students the opportunity to enjoy or participate in performances. Students also coordinated with the campus food service provider to facilitate the student-run alternative coffee bar as part of the primary lounge/seating area.
