Susquehanna University administrators wished to update the interior architecture and the food-service areas of the Degenstein Campus Center in order to provide energetic, well-lighted spaces for students to gather and eat. The architect redesigned the dining venues, kitchen, lounge and meeting rooms with an eye toward modernizing the 30-year-old decor and amenities. State-of-the-art meeting rooms and lounges are complemented by bright, intimate dining settings in the campus center’s Evert Dining Room and Encore Cafe.
The design focused on two specific areas within the existing facility: the Evert Dining Room, which serves as the main food-service operation, and the Encore Cafe, which has both table and lounge seating areas. The Evert Dining Room servery, kitchen and seating areas were reconfigured, and the Encore Cafe was enlarged to make room for expanded food service and intimate seating areas in an adjacent lounge. Diverse seating options, in combination with the ceiling articulations, provide a more intimate, less institutional dining experience. The serving area was designed to provide students with a variety of food selections within a configuration that eases congestion and enhances traffic flow.
Construction began after graduation in May 2005 and had to be completed before the start of the fall semester in August. With a strict construction deadline, planning was an essential part of the project’s success. Because the campus center is a vital part of campus life, safety concerns were considered during demolition and construction, as portions of the facility had to remain open.
