Sunnyvale Middle School, Next Generation Classroom Addition
Sunnyvale, Texas
Design team:
Keith Anderson, AIA, NCARB (Principal-in-Charge); Derrick York, AIA, LEED AP (Design Lead); Weston Emmert, AIA, NCARB (Project Manager)
The Sunnyvale ISD Middle School Next Generation Classroom Addition expands the school’s capacity from 400 to 700 students in grades 5 to 8. The addition includes 12 classrooms, a computer lab, a STEM lab, support spaces, and, most important, a central shared learning commons.
The goal of the addition was to not only accommodate more students, but also establish a collaborative learning space for students and teachers to optimize next-generation learning methodologies. The collaborative space includes flexible furniture, advanced technology, and abundant natural lighting. This new addition supports students, teachers and administrators who are reimagining public education, from helping them take what they know about learning and applying it to school design, to issuing challenge grants that enable educators to completely redesign their schools.
