Sunnyvale Intermediate School
Sunnyvale, Texas
Sunnyvale Independent School District has launched an educational transformation that requires more than traditional classrooms can provide. This is the district’s first school designed specifically to support the way Sunnyvale students and teachers interact with one another. The campus accommodates grades 3 to 5 and has three equally sized learning communities, or houses.
Each house is sized for equal numbers of students: nine classrooms on two floors, along with breakout spaces and small group rooms. Students stay together in the same house all three years.
The houses overlook a central commons area and media center. The commons area opens directly to dedicated spaces for art, science, music, and special education. Covered outdoor spaces on the ground and second floors provide additional common areas for breakout learning.
Continuous glass and the absence of corridors enable virtually every corner of the school to have open visibility, yet with robust sound separation. Students with a variety of learning styles have found their favorite spots among the many different spaces in their new school.
