The auditorium at Summit High School was built in the 1950s and, with the exception of a 1990s air-conditioning addition, no improvements had been made to the space.

The stage rigging was determined to be unsafe and in need of repairs or replacement. The stage flooring had been damaged from many years of constructing and removing props, creating an uneven surface and a tripping hazard for performers. Original house seating was damaged and in need of replacement along with worn carpeting and asbestos containing floor tile. Original side and rear wall paneling was in need of refurbishment or replacement. Rear exit door hardware was not code-compliant and also required replacement.

To address these issues, the project was submitted to the state and approved for a health and safety improvement grant covering 40 percent of the project costs. Other improvements include lighting, sound and acoustic improvements, along with a new "cloud" ceiling and audiovisual control area. The result is an eye-pleasing and well-tuned space for future performances.
