Suffolk University, New England School of Art and Design

The New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University (NESAD) is a new construction, multi-use academic building housing classrooms, art studios and administrative offices. In addition to the art school program, 10 general-use classrooms serve the College of Arts and Sciences and television studio for the Department of Journalism.

The building’s interior is designed to pull the adjacent plaza’s activity into the first floor and to a public art gallery. A tiered lecture hall and an interior "hang out" staircase off the entry also are included.

The interior design concept for the building was to create bright, open "critique space" facing the plaza, creating a window into the activities of the building and light-filled spaces for students to interact and see the work of other students.

The concept for the furniture, finishes and fabrics was to use solid forms, with bold color and graphics set in a fairly neutral envelope. The building functions as a gallery space for changing artwork, showcasing the creativity and energy of the students.
