SUNY Plattsburgh’s Clinton Dining Hall was overdue for a renovation. Goals included new serving stations, space modernization, upgraded systems, and ADA compliance.
A second-floor entry presented challenges, but an idea for an Adirondack-inspired “helix” took root and grew organically. Students descend a stone-wrapped staircase that evokes a walk in the woods. As they proceed, they encounter a fireplace and a variety of seating options.
The servery and dining room had been dark. This project updated everything, creating a retail ambiance with interactive food stations. The dining experience was elevated through improvements in nutrition, food sourcing, preparation, efficiency, and sustainability initiatives.
Students informed the design, resulting in more healthful options, and more connection between the kitchen and students, as well as more “to-go” options, sustainable practices, local sourcing and better recycling.
The result is a modern facility with flexible food stations serving a variety of options. A new kiosk ordering system enables students to customize entrees.
The new dining experience, enhanced by majestic wooded views of the Saranac River, is one that Plattsburgh students will enjoy for years to come.
