The SUNY Geneseo Red Jacket Dining Hall, a two-story, brick-and-steel structure that had been untouched since its construction in 1966, was ripe for a renovation. The plan included bright and clean new serving stations and expanded second-floor dining. The approach was to transform the space into a multipurpose destination, tying into Geneseo’s ultimate vision of Eat-Study-Play.
The design evokes unfolding of space, as the lights pull visitors through the space. Gone are the compartmentalized features of the original structure, and students are now welcomed into an open space flooded with light.
The new main dining area incorporates a hovering pergola structure, and provides more intimate seating beneath a timber canopy and expressed steel frame.
The two-story windows provide views of the Genesee Valley and the neighboring residential quad. Solid doors were replaced with glass, bringing in even more natural light. The north dining room offers a cozy atmosphere with a fireplace, lounge furniture and flexible seating. Integrated technology adds event capability to the space.
The first-floor servery boasts a variety of food stations. On the second floor, students enjoy a deli-style convenience store. To promote better interaction, the chefs were brought out from the kitchen, creating a greater overall transparency.
This project was developed with sustainability in mind. Energy optimization was achieved through modern lighting, improved controls, and updated HVAC. Food scraps are composted and used throughout the campus as fertilizer.
