Springfield Middle School

Teachers, students, parents, administrators and architects worked together to design this Wilson County prototype middle school, which is equipped with a full-size gym, auditorium and cafeteria. These assembly spaces are arranged around a central commons for student circulation during school and public events after-hours.
The main corridor and central commons provide administrative offices with direct visual supervision of everyone entering the building and maximize security for the entire facility. Three classroom wings radiate from this central corridor. Each wing is color-coded to help students navigate their way through the school. High spaces and clerestory windows that provide sunlight to the interior of the building also indicate intersections of circulation axes.
The media center is at the center of the classroom wings and is accessible to all grades. The interior features extensive sunlight supplied by the storefront windows, which also provide critical views of the exterior landscape.
Bus and automobile traffic is separated on the site that also includes baseball and football fields. The building is clad with concrete masonry and brick; sloped roofs are standing-seam metal.
