Southwestern University, Brown Cody Residence Hall
Georgetown, Texas
As part of Southwestern University’s master planning efforts, it was decided to replace the existing Brown-Cody Residence Hall for women. The original structure, built in the 1920s, had not had any major renovations to the physical structure. The facility houses freshmen women in a three-story structure and is built directly over the old location of the original building.
The exterior is constructed of Texas limestone to match the campus. One hundred thirty-two women are housed in 33 four-bedroom suites. The ground floor of the facility has a large meeting room and lounge, an apartment for a resident advisor, laundry facilities, storage facilities, public restrooms and the necessary mechanical spaces for the facility. Each four-person suite includes two bedrooms and a bathroom. A boiler heats the building and cooling is provided by the campus system. A series of HVAC units serve the suites, and an air handler in the attic serves the common areas.
The new facility retained many of the existing architectural details, including stair rail and doorknob designs. The entry hall has a coffered indirect lit ceiling, terrazzo floor and wood wainscot. Each floor has a study room and computer room. There is a small area for student gatherings and outdoor porches.
