Southwest Mississippi Community College, Regional Workforce Training Center
Summit, Mississippi
The Regional Workforce Training Center, located at the Southwest Mississippi Community College campus, serves as the workforce development incubator for Amite, Pike, Walthall, and Wilkinson counties in the southern region of Mississippi. With administrative offices to support emergency response, health, and safety training, the more than 32,000-square-foot facility includes health science classrooms and a multifunction conference hall that allows SMCC to provide innovative and customized training courses designed for professional development and skills upgrade. It is also able to host large job fairs, supporting not just the college but also the community.
The function-driven design is elevated by focusing on the details, such as layering the front entry to break the heavy massing generated by functional requirements, highlighting columns and introducing subtle patterns through materials in the main corridor and conference hall to visually divide the impressive volume and giving human scale to the spaces, and as simple as integrating the downspouts in the columns and walls. Thus, a people-friendly building was sculpted that would otherwise have been industrial looking.
