This three-story, 50,000-square-foot academic building with partial basement is home to the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development, which includes classrooms, research laboratories and offices for the school’s education programs. In the area of human development, the school offers master’s degrees in counseling, dispute resolution and liberal studies. The building also includes the wellness department and associated labs, providing wellness courses and non-credit enrichment classes. Design documents were developed utilizing building information modeling (BIM), and LEED gold 2009 NC certification is in progress.

The architect began LEED consultation services at the construction document phase of the project. This project originally was proposed by the owner to be silver certified. Since beginning LEED management of the project, the team has been able to propose additional LEED points at little or no extra cost that will elevate the project to gold certification.
