South Mountain Elementary School
Dillsburg, Pennsylvania
The 68,000-square-foot South Mountain Elementary School was designed to accommodate a growing K-5 enrollment of 600 students. In a series of projects, this district was able to implement a state-of-the-art educational program at the lowest cost per square foot in the state, as reported by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
The facility uses brick, ground-face masonry, glass curtainwalls and standing-seam metal roofing to distinguish various interior functions and spatial relationships.
Interior building organization permits team-teaching by grade level and promotes community use without sacrificing security.
The library’s two-story glass curtainwall, on axis of the main entry, provides constant natural light, and views of the surrounding landscape. Instructional and reading areas are distinguished by carpet accent colors and bordering. Oak wood detailing is prevalent throughout the checkout area, shelving, entry piers and coordinating furniture. Technology is incorporated into multiple study carrels throughout the library and adjacent computer room.
