Serving as a hub for its thriving community, South High School at Union Village was designed in partnership with Lake County YMCA and Willoughby Senior Center. To unite the three separate entities under one roof while providing each with its own entry and identity created a unique design challenge. The result is a shared campus that seamlessly connects the school district with its community and serves residents of all ages.

The district building program was designed to conceptually unite the two separate high schools that once formed historic Union High School. As the sister school of North High, which is dedicated to the arts, South High is home to the district’s athletic facilities, including a fieldhouse with athletic courts, elevated track, and competition pool.

Built as an addition to the newly converted middle school, South High promotes student-centered learning with spaces tailored for collaboration and a personalized learning experience. The collegiate-like Student Union, which features a courtyard, collaborative stair and food court-style dining, unites active and academic learning spaces and provides a central gathering space for students.
