The growing Solon Community School District required a new middle school for grades 5 to 8. Driven by modern architecture and collaborative spaces, ISG worked alongside the district to develop a master plan. That led to a $23 million bond vote to pay for construction of the middle school. The middle school commons consists of two stories linked by a presentation staircase and built-in seating. Collaborative learning spaces were dispersed throughout the building as well as project, STEM, and exploratory classrooms.
Directly off the commons is a two-story glass-enclosed media center. With bold colors and modern designs, it provides a variety of seating options for students. The educational wing features an abundance of transparency between spaces, as natural light flows between learning studios that link small group collaboration areas. The daylighting, as well as geothermal heating systems, reduce the district’s long-term energy costs. The music area was designed to double as a tornado storm shelter to address both code and performance needs.
