Slate Creek Elementary

Slate Creek Elementary is one of 12 construction projects funded by a $28.3 million bond referendum and is the first elementary school built in this district since 1962. Slate Creek is a program prototype facility for the Newton School District that reflects significant changes in the delivery of elementary education.
This design has a multimedia emphasis and is linked with a computer learning lab, multimedia production area and media-distribution head-end room. This is the control and origination point for learning resources for the facility, which is also linked via wide-area network to other buildings in the district.
The facility is programmed around six grade levels that are divided into two grade clusters. A typical cluster includes six classrooms, four small-group rooms, a large wet/dry lab, restrooms and storage.
The building is primarily steel frame with brick veneer and metal skin. The exterior is clad in a mixture of red brick, blue standing-seam roofs and reflective galvalume horizontal metal siding.
The mechanical system is primarily dual-duct distribution from hot and cold air handlers on the roof. This system provides individual room control, reduced maintenance and diversity of zoning for energy efficiency.
