Skyview Elementary School
Morgantown, West Virginia
This project originally was conceived as a single 900-student, pre-K to 5 school. However, the community, preferring smaller schools, presented the board of education with a plan to construct two separate 550-student schools. This led to the passage of a
$50 million bond that provided $15.7 million for the new schools. The project was matched with $3.6 million from the School Building Authority of West Virginia.
The program encourages the separation of the pre-K programs from the mainstream programs, yet allows direct access to the shared dining and gymnasium spaces. Because of the high percentage of parent transportation, a separate car access road and entrance were created. This also allowed for a school day entry, as well as an after-hours entry for programs in the commons and gymnasium.
The facility is equipped with a state-of-the-art keyless access control and monitoring system including a “man lock” vestibule. This requires visitors to request entry and helps provide for a safe learning environment.
