Siegel Middle School accommodates grades 6 to 8. With a planned core student enrollment of 1,000, the facility is organized in a “minischool” concept—classrooms and lockers are grouped by academic grades on dedicated, separate hallways. The program includes a technology-friendly media center, 700-seat auditorium, art and music spaces, dining/food service and athletic facilities. All spaces are organized around an open, two-story circulation spine, creating an academic mall environment. Students get to and from major activity/assembly areas from a major north/south hallway. Circulation flows to each “minischool” and a technology/science wing by way of a major east/west hallway.
This is the first facility constructed using this program, adapted for a 12-acre site. The school colors of blue and teal are the foundation of the interior palette. Accent colors used in each “minischool,” create a distinctive atmosphere for each wing. Natural light is an important element in this educational setting: clerestory windows provide natural light throughout hallways, and the cafeteria has window walls on two sides.
