State-mandated library research visits—multiplied by increasing enrollment and community use—were the impetus for a new library/media center addition to this 1960s junior high school. The centrally located 8,000-square-foot center features 21st-century technology and equipment that accommodates future growth of both student population and the holdings of the library/media center.
The new facility can be accessed directly by the community for continuing-education purposes through a new entrance addition into the corridor. Areas are designed for group and individual computer use, supplied by in-floor electrical power and data supply systems that allow for flexible furniture arrangements.
The computer classroom and multimedia/video lab provide space for a full-size class to study and develop multimedia techniques. The facility features a two-story reading room with natural light provided by clerestory windows on the north, east and south elevations.
Tack surfaces throughout the space provide space for changing exhibits. Attention was given to backgrounds and furnishings of varied surface textures and warm colors to encourage facility use and enhance the learning environment.
