SCC Welding Technology Center

The Southeast Community College Welding Technology Center was conceived as a response to Nebraska’s growing shortage of skilled labor and the evolving demands of welding education. As home to the state’s oldest welding program, SCC faced rising enrollment alongside outdated facilities that limited capacity, constrained instruction and lacked infrastructure for modern technologies.
Davis Design partnered with SCC to program and design a state-of-the-art facility, now one of the largest educational welding training centers in the United States. The project expands student capacity, integrates industry partnerships, and creates a safe, high-performance environment for equipment-intensive instruction. Technical priorities included durable materials, advanced ventilation, and clear spatial organization to support safety, visibility, and efficient material flow.
The design is organized around a zoning strategy that separates “dirty” and “clean” environments. Welding labs and fabrication spaces are grouped as industrial zones, enabling materials to move efficiently while maintaining operational clarity. Adjacent classrooms, offices, and collaboration areas create seamless transitions between instruction and hands-on application, enabling real-time, experiential learning.
A central commons corridor serves as the building’s organizing spine, connecting program elements while fostering visibility and engagement. This flexible space supports industry demonstrations, product showcases, and community interaction, reinforcing the facility’s role as both an educational and workforce development hub. An upper-level collaboration zone further encourages interaction among students and faculty.
The aesthetic approach elevates a traditionally utilitarian building through a balance of durability and refinement. Precast concrete panels provide resilience, and lighter construction defines academic areas. Clerestory windows introduce daylight into welding labs, creating bright, open environments that enhance comfort and visibility.
Through strategic planning and strong partnership, the center redefines vocational education, expanding access to training and strengthening connections between education and industry.
