Santa Rosa Middle School

Santa Rosa Middle School was housed in a 1934 WPA building for many years. The stone-walled building eventually became too difficult to maintain, and the building was too small to accommodate new educational programs.
Planning for a new building began in 2001 when a local resident donated 14 acres on the growing west side of Santa Rosa. This began a cooperative effort among school, city, county and state government to construct a state-of-the-art facility to meet Santa Rosa’s development needs.
The location of the school has sparked new housing development and construction of a new hospital. The city and county are contributing utility improvements and development of an athletic field in exchange for the old middle school. The former building now will house city and county government offices.
Santa Rosa Middle School was built in two phases and has 49,589 square feet of space. The 10 regular classrooms, science classroom and library incorporate daylighting features. A light shelf on the exterior window wall bounces daylight deep into the room. A similar shelf is used in the kitchen to brighten this work environment.
The cafeteria serves as the focal point of the school where students can congregate. The quarter-round space with a cone-shaped roof gives the school a distinctive appearance.
