San Marcos CISD, Rodriguez Elementary School
San Marcos, Texas
Rodriguez Elementary School was designed to empower teacher collaboration to improve literacy in a majority English Language Learner community. Each learning pod is designed for interconnections between classrooms and a collaborative teacher planning area to support co-teaching. Students have fingertip access to literacy learning because all classrooms wrap around small group learning rooms with high-acoustical environments that foster the sound recognition necessary for language development. The pods provide a variety of learning environments that enable teachers to push or pull students as necessary to facilitate the optimal learning environment—reading alone in a nook, working in a small group, or making a large presentation. Each pod is also directly connected to split-level outdoor courtyards. These outdoor learning spaces include an amphitheater for performance, a rain collection cistern for sustainability lessons, and a community garden for science. A dual-level media center at the heart of the facility connects the two courtyards with a monumental staircase that enables students to flow freely from one section of the building to the next.
