San Jancinto College, Lee Davis Library

Originally built in 1966, the Lee Davis Library at San Jacinto College needed a major renovation to keep up with the needs of modern students.
The design challenge was to preserve the building’s original Mid-Century Modern aesthetic while improving functionality and expanding the facility into a dynamic learning commons. To address structural problems, the project required complete demolition of the interior, and major MEP and technology upgrades.
Solutions:
• The central stair was brought into code compliance without compromising its original elegance.
• New finishes were selected to honor the original design intent and extend its significance into the 21st century.
• Fritting was added to the exterior glass to control glare and heat gain, and make the main lobby usable for events and study.
• The library interiors were designed to provide maximum flexibility for multiple layouts.
The renovation had a transformative effect on the library. It has become the heart of student activities and is host to a variety of community functions/events.
“[The] changes are already directly impacting our students’ success rates,” says Karen Blankenship, the library’s director. “It’s a dream come true.”
