South Campus Plaza functions as a dynamic mixed-use gateway between San Diego State University (SDSU) and the existing city edge – traditionally the Town and Gown interface. Offering university-managed campus housing alongside ground-floor retail developments, this mixed-use project responds to the needs of the university’s students and the surrounding community.
South Campus Plaza embodies SDSU’s commitment to sustainability. The project was constructed using green building guidelines and practices, and designed as a pedestrian, transit-oriented, and bicycle-friendly development. The Plaza delivers attractive pedestrian walkways that provide safe and convenient access to the SDSU Transit Center and the greater campus. The development is certified LEED Silver and is expected to exceed California Energy Standards by 15 percent; it incorporates several measures for water reduction. The street-level retail space encourages a green lifestyle as the Plaza provides grocery stores, restaurants, and other stores, which gives residents and other community members the opportunity to forgo driving for amenities.
Including this facility, SDSU provides 10,000 of its students with housing on the campus itself or within walking distance of campus in university-affiliated housing. This project brings SDSU and the San Diego community together and creates a cohesive vision of the future.
