The Student Services Building at San Diego Miramar College resulted from a collaborative programming and design process involving the client, faculty, staff, design team, students and other key decision makers. Together, the team decided that the project needed to establish architectural unity with the existing campus, support the college’s goal to transition from a commuter campus, create a sense of place and accommodate extended services. Additionally, the planning team envisioned a Student Services Building that would serve as a model of both sustainability and functionality. The resulting design far surpasses users’ expectations and will enhance students’ college experience for generations to come.
The Student Services Building provides space for all non-academic functions to be housed in one location, including student services, food services/dining, the campus bookstore, a convenience store and a cyber café/multipurpose room. Previously, some of these services were absent altogether, and others were situated in undersized temporary buildings throughout the campus.
The new facility consolidates existing services and expands the range of services that are offered. Miramar College historically has been known as a commuter campus; the new Student Services Building has helped transform this identity by encouraging students to stay on campus and be more engaged in their educational experience.
