Sam Houston State University, The Woodlands Center
The Woodlands, Texas
A satellite campus for Sam Houston State University (SHSU), this new facility offers upper-class undergraduate and graduate-level programs. The new four-story building allows for the expansion of programs needed by SHSU and a neighboring college.
Although the new facility includes a variety of general-purpose classrooms and instructional labs, it was designed with more than teaching spaces in mind—it is an extension of the SHSU brand, communicating its spirit and values to another part of the region.
An amenity zone with lounge space, vending areas, restrooms and computer stations offers students a variety of places for informal gathering or quiet study between classes. Throughout these public areas, large-scale photo murals of the main campus and the use of super-graphic logos imbue the spaces with a clear sense of identity and what SHSU president Dana Gibson calls “Sam flair.”
A centrally situated open stair offers views of the picturesque site and features a mosaic tile mural by well-known artist Dixie Friend Gay. The woodland theme of the mural depicts the pond situated just north of the building.
