Salt Lake Community College, Jordan Campus Health Sciences Center

The Health Sciences Center (HSC) is the newest addition to the Jordan Campus of Salt Lake Community College. With a building area of about 150,000 square feet, the project will enable the college to concentrate in a single location functions that provide direct support to the health-sciences programs. The new building includes medical training space for various programs at the college, including biotechnology, medical assistant, medical lab, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiological technology, surgical and health administration. In addition to classroom, laboratory and therapeutic training spaces, the center includes a library, wellness center, auditorium, and various levels of student and faculty support.
Orientation of the center and its various components respond to the campus master-planned system of orthogonal, solar and view grids, and is situated along the east side of the main campus plaza. The HSC building comprises four almost-separate structures configured around a central atrium space, which serves as a central organizing element for the building. The high, sloped roof over the atrium—seen from most locations on campus—soars skyward toward the south. Its ridgeline parallels the plaza, and its form responds to the powerful imagery of nearby mountain ranges. The design of the center includes features such as quality indoor air and daylighting in classrooms and common areas, which provides a more healthful learning environment for students and faculty. The center is seeking LEED certification.
