Saint Vincent College, Sis & Herman Dupre Science Pavilion

Saint Vincent College is completing a project to expand and renovate facilities for the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Science, Mathematics, and Computing. The multi-phased renovation and addition, known as the Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion, will provide flexible laboratories and classrooms, collaborative research spaces for students and faculty, and offices for the academic and outreach programs of the Boyer School, including space for the bioinformatics and biotechnology programs. The facility features a 50-foot-high glass atrium as the central gathering space for science faculty and students, a 100-seat lecture hall, a planetarium, and areas for displaying student and faculty research.
The pavilion was designed with sensitivity to the environment as a primary objective, in keeping with Saint Vincent’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship. It includes geothermal heat pumps as the primary source of heating and cooling, a photovoltaic array and a high-performance glazing system. Two solar chimneys in the atrium will take advantage of natural convection to exhaust heat from this space and mitigate the constant need for air conditioning.
This project demonstrates the use of renewable and geothermal energy in a high-demand facility and serves as a teaching tool for the college’s historically strong programs in environmental science. It recently received a LEED gold rating.
