Saint Mary’s College, Spes Unica Hall
Notre Dame, Indiana
Spes Unica Hall is a new 65,000-square-foot academic building at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind. This building contains 17 classrooms, and more than 90 faculty and staff offices. The new building is home for 14 academic departments and five institutes, including the Center for Academic Innovation and the Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership.
The building contains a variety of classroom configurations ranging from a large, oval 60-person classroom with tiered seating to small seminar-style classrooms for eight to 12 students.
The building also provides specialized social science labs, numerous group study and conference rooms, a reflection room, and a cafe connected to an outdoor rooftop terrace. The heart of the building is a two-story student commons that overlooks a large campus lawn. The south-facing windows in the commons enable sunlight to penetrate deep into the building interior.
The forms and materials used on the exterior of the building have been designed to complement the existing architecture on the Saint Mary’s campus. Construction on the building began in spring of 2007 and was completed in time for classes in fall 2008.
