Saint Louis University, Edward A. Doisy Research Center
St. Louis, Missouri
Needing to upgrade its campus research facilities, Saint Louis University’s (SLU) Health Sciences Center commissioned the architect to develop a building that consolidated the university’s nationally recognized strengths in the study of neuroscience, cardiovascular and pulmonary function, and immunology and infectious diseases.
The firm responded with the Edward A. Doisy Research Center, a 206,000-square-foot health, science and research building. It is the centerpiece of the university’s plan to upgrade its facilities and also helps form the eastern anchor of CORTEX, a public-private economic initiative promoting the development of a nationally recognized life-sciences industry in the urban corridor between SLU and Washington University.
The Edward A. Doisy Research Center has 10 stories offering modular and flexible laboratory spaces, maximizing views and natural lighting, along with conference rooms and a cafeteria. Offices in the building are grouped to stimulate interaction among researchers. The building is LEED-certified and features an 8,000-square-foot green roof. The building’s narrow design enables it to receive maximum natural light.
“The building’s iconic form encourages creative work spaces with daylighting and views, and an exciting conference space.”–2010 jury
