Rutherford High School, Auditorium Building Renovation
Panama City, Florida
Built in 1962, Rutherford High School’s 10,500-square-foot, 450-seat Auditorium Building required renovations to meet State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF) standards, and address stage accessibility, poor lighting and acoustical issues. The program included a complete interior renovation in the auditorium and support spaces, including a dance/aerobics room.
A chair lift in front of the stage provided accessibility, but impeded views during performances. Relocating the lift to a new recessed vestibule provided accessibility and unobstructed audience views.
Removing existing auditorium acoustical tile ceilings revealed the original roof deck assembly. Installation of curved wood ceiling reflectors, wood side-wall diffusers and rear-wall absorption panels improved overall acoustical performance. A new state-of-the-art sound-control booth is situated at the rear of the auditorium.
The new carpet, seating, wood stage dressing and speaker fabric were selected to reflect the school’s colors, mascot and spirit. Working closely with band and choir directors, the art instructor and principal, Mike Kennedy, enabled the design team to achieve the optimum acoustical and visual setting that supports and enhances the school’s activities and its slogan of "Ram Pride."
