Russell Primary School

The key to the successful design of the Russell Primary School was the architect’s ability to “think small”—to create an environment appealing to young children, while still practical for everyday use by parents, faculty and the community. Planned especially for the education of preschool through the third grade, the school presented a unique design challenge to the architect.
The media center is located at the heart of the school, and takes advantage of the two-story design to create a dramatic environment. Windows opening into both upper-and lower-story corridors invite children into this dynamic space. The library uses lively colors and visual designs to create an exciting space for learning activities. A brightly painted storybook playhouse near the story area is designed to hold large picture books for younger students. Flexible computer spaces are designed so that both individuals and groups can utilize the media center’s technology.
The synthesis of design elements creates a media center that both functions well and inspires students to view learning as an adventure.
