Roscoe Middle School

Planning and program design responsibility for this facility, located on a 15-acre site, included district administrators, teachers, parents and community members. Focusing on the “interdisciplinary teaming/house” philosophy resulted in a dynamic and flexible design for maximum community use, inside and out.
The key design challenge for this middle school was incorporating the critical components of middle school philosophy within a small attendance facility while planning for expansion.
Built for grades 7 and 8, the middle school is divided into four houses. Each student house has:
-Four general classrooms.
-One flexible classroom.
-Conference rooms.
-A staff planning room.
-A shared resource space.
Scheduling the flexible classroom for various disciplines while maintaining the integrity of a house is key. The flexibility of each house provides conducive environments for large- and small-group interaction and individual instructional opportunities.
To allow for growth, the core components (gymnasium, science labs, cafeteria, hallways and technology spaces) are designed to accommodate 1,000 students. The facility is designed to be doubled in size easily by adding four more houses.
