Robert Morris College, Lake County Campus
Waukegan, Illinois
Robert Morris College is a private, not-for-profit organization established in 1913. With the construction of the 36,000-square-foot facility in Lake County, Ill., Robert Morris expands its total number of campus facilities to seven.
The Lake County Campus offered an opportunity to fulfill a new educational and procedural concept for Robert Morris College. This included the creation of more multipurpose space for students, a shared computer facility for use as a faculty teaching laboratory and general student computer station, and the establishment of a system of student educational managers. The campus also was to house classrooms, faculty offices, a library, athletic departments and admissions offices.
In addition, the college wanted to reach out to the public by making the facility available as a conference center to the nearby technology and medical research communities.
This diversified program created a unique design challenge with regard to general organization, image and security. The solution established a central student commons area with well-defined, but securable access to the classrooms. A resource center, reception/dining area, game/recreational area, fitness center and food-service area are situated within the student commons. These spaces can be made available to the public, along with access to two large lecture classrooms that function as part of the conference center.
