Students at the Roanoke Academy for Mathematics and Science (RAMS) literally are surrounded with their lessons, which are built subtly into the design. From open trusses in the art studio that teach the mechanics of structure, to the Venn Diagram and Pythagorean Theorem patterned in the floor, the building reinforces math and science in a concrete, hands-on way. A federally funded magnet school, RAMS is a preK to 5 elementary school in an urban neighborhood and serves children throughout the city.
Along RAMS’ “Main Street” are the media center, administrative and guidance suites, and the interactive math, music, science and computer labs. Scientific exploration is enhanced through a greenhouse and outdoor classroom with a fishpond. Lining the main hallway and in each classroom are Frank Lloyd Wright-designed windows, which reinforce geometric shapes and plant structures.
The labs serve as hubs for two classroom neighborhoods—one for younger and one for older students. Each neighborhood features teacher storage, workrooms, one-on-one instruction rooms and extended learning areas where classes come together. Adjacent to one neighborhood is the city’s REACH program for disabled students. The full-size gymnasium, art studio and cafetorium also are used by the community.
Engineering design incorporates the latest in technology and uses smart, energy-efficient HVAC
systems.
