Riverside City College Life Science & Physical Science Reconstruction to Business Education & Computer Information Systems Project
Riverside, California
The two-story Physical & Life Science Buildings were constructed in the mid-60s and were designed to house laboratories, classrooms, and faculty offices. The new design proposes a seismic retrofit to the structure and demolition of all existing interior spaces in order to rebuild new classrooms, conference rooms, a multipurpose room, meeting rooms, computer labs, offices, testing centers, and support spaces.
The four-story service tower was constructed in 1967 and was designed to house central stairs, restrooms, a mechanical room, and an analog clock. The proposed design recommends demolishing and rebuilding all restrooms, storage, utility, and mechanical rooms.
As part of the proposed design, 19six recommended constructing an addition between the two buildings at the tower on the upper level; that will create a lobby and main entry for the three structures.
The addition will house circulation spaces, meeting rooms, an engagement center, and an open read/study area. On the lower level, 19six has proposed enclosing the underside of the existing balcony with storefronts to provide interior access between the two buildings.
