Strengthening the mission of "teaching, learning and community building," the Sabine Hall Science Building provides a new home that offers 16 state-of-the-art associate degree-level sustainable science teaching labs, faculty offices, a tutoring lab, campus bookstore and coffee shop. The new science building delivered four primary goals: provide top-quality modern facilities for biology, chemistry, physics and geosciences education; enhance the campus master plan; respect the architectural vernacular; and earn LEED platinum certification within budget.

To support academic and student-life programming objectives, the building promotes mentoring and tutoring of all types of students in an inviting and supportive learning environment. The building also encourages non-science students to gain exposure to the sciences, showcases art about science, improves student life, and provides a campus "living room" focused on bringing together the greater college community.

The structure is sited with a new east-west orientation that promotes ideal solar orientation and a more protected microclimate. The exterior massing supports the campus tenets of adhering to a more "human scale," complementing the surrounding buildings; it uses the Richland blend of orange brick and exposed concrete with steel and glass.

"The design brings light into the lab environments and creates ‘collision’ spaces for students and researchers to collaborate. The exterior elevation blends at a human scale on campus."–2012 Jury
