Richard J. Lee Elementary School
Coppell, Texas
Driven by the Coppell Independent School District’s desire for a non-traditional curriculum, the design of Richard J. Lee Elementary School supports a challenge-based instructional model as well as the district’s sustainability goals
A diverse selection of learning zones lets students work in groups of varying sizes, and the open-concept plan lets them move fluidly between options and promotes informal supervision. Rather than the conventional organization of classrooms by grade, students are grouped into a series of interconnected learning neighborhoods arranged around a central collaboration space. Reconfigurable furniture and technology and an outdoor learning lab add to the list of flexible learning environments.
LEED Gold certified, Lee Elementary is the first net-zero-energy elementary school in the state. Sustainable design features include a geothermal HVAC system, gray water usage, locally manufactured materials, and 100 percent LED lighting. The design incorporates advanced energy modeling, which optimizes the plan and building placement, and controls the effect of solar gain. The building is designed as a teaching tool; visual graphics are used to educate students and the community about sustainability.
