The Visual Arts Center at Red Hook High School blends new and existing spaces to form three art studios with an adjoining gallery and courtyard for exhibiting student artwork. Two existing art studios were renovated for sculpture and ceramic arts. A new entrance was created with centralized project storage and teachers’ office.
The new 1,000-square-foot Studio A, with its high barrel-vaulted roof and exposed structure, provides an expansive loft space for painting, drawing and graphic art. The studio makes optimum use of natural daylight and the dynamics of sun and shadow. Indirect lighting fixtures bounce light off the white vaulted structure above. Perimeter cabinetry provides ample work counters, sink areas and storage. Center work tables can be reconfigured as needed. A roll-up door allows for stage sets, designed and built in the studio, to be easily moved to the auditorium.
The studio reaches beyond the interior space, removing limitations on imagination and the size of artwork. The center is an activity hub where students come in contact daily with the creative arts.
