Purdue University, Jerry S. Rawls Hall
West Lafayette, Indiana
Rawls Hall is remarkable in that it both stands out and fits in, balancing distinctiveness with contextual ease. Its strikingly modern design is a reflection of the school’s pre-eminent role in training technology-based MBAs.
The building is a landmark structure that forms a gateway to the university while making a graceful transition from the West Lafayette retail district to the Purdue campus.
Organized around a central daylighted, “crossroads” space that forms the heart of the school, Rawls serves as a meeting place for faculty and students. Designed to support the school’s collaborative teaching philosophy, the program includes 11 classrooms, breakout rooms for small-group meetings and a 215-seat lecture hall.
Above all, Purdue wanted a state-of-the-art teaching facility. In response, the architects developed four specialized teaching spaces—an economics-simulation lab, a behavioral-study lab, a computer lab and a distance-learning center—as well as a 4,000-square-foot student forum, where students and faculty can make presentations to visiting business professionals. Also included are interactive classrooms and offices for recruitment and job placement, administration and faculty.
