PS 357 Bronx, N.Y.
Bronx, New York
The vertical stairtower, colorful entrance canopy and rooftop playground enclosure are the distinctive design features that respond to the street corners, animate the skyline, and provide pedestrian scale and a welcoming front entrance for this new four-story neighborhood school.
The small site (100 feet by 150 feet) required an efficient double-loaded corridor plan with centralized entrances, lobby security desk, main office and elevators providing security and access to the library, cafeteria, gym and play areas. The early childhood playground is on the sunny south side on the ground floor of the building while the upper grades use the dramatic rooftop play area enclosed with a nearly invisible stainless steel mesh on colorful framing.
Color-coded corridor floor and wall surfaces brighten the interiors and provide identity for the public spaces of the lobby, cafeteria, and gymnatorium.
The exterior buff-colored brick is similar to the surrounding apartment buildings and the bright metal and glass design accents at the stair towers, entry canopy, playground enclosure and windows act to enhance the school identity and respond to the neighborhood context.
