Prairie View Elementary
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Prairie View Elementary is a new 700-student preK-4 school in the growing Mustang school district. The design concept was developed around clear plan organization and ease of wayfinding. District leadership desired a unique school with playful interiors.
The primary circulation axis runs north-south. Three academic wings extend from the main circulation corridor, each with its own color palette. The unique colors are displayed on “portals” at each corridor entry, and further highlighted in “flex” areas within each wing. The playful shapes and colors of each portal are gathered and repeated in joint-use spaces such as the gym, cafeteria and media center. The acoustical panel shapes in the gym are cut from standard 4-by-8-foot material.
The gym is tilt-up concrete, and the rest of the building is steel frame with metal stud walls and brick veneer. Other features include easily accessed storm shelters in each wing and a ground-source geothermal system for energy conservation.
