Prairie View A&M University, Henrietta T. Farrell Dining Hall
Prairie View, Texas
Farrell Dining Hall celebrates student life on campus while upholding the university’s legacy. Adaptive reuse transformed an outdated café into an exciting full-service dining hall (The Zone) that provides the “place” for students. Serving various program needs centrally, a convenient deli grab-and-go and laundromat (PV Suds) are visually connected to The Zone. The modern food hub expands dining opportunities for students. Five flexible exhibition food concepts interspersed throughout the hall innovate and animate the communal dining experience.
As a teaching tool, the facility’s bold supergraphics emphasize healthful eating habits. Occupants reconnect to campus history, via the mural of Ms. Farrell and the centrally situated original laundromat scale.
The industrial chic interior blends sleek with raw in a technology-rich atmosphere of free-flowing, open space. The sophisticated color palette with natural wood conveys texture and warmth. Ample patterned and frosted glazing offers daylighting and interactive views between spaces. The floating ceiling, random linear lighting, and striated flooring spark interest and encourage exploration. A variety of flexible multicolored furniture supports gathering, lounging and studying, even after dining hours.
