Multiphased additions and renovations beautifully transformed Port Washington High School into a “like-new” school that better supports 21st-century learning.

Challenged with using the natural topography while maximizing natural light and surrounding views, architects designed a unique, three-story “academic stack” built into a bluff. Classroom “pods” stem from a main corridor—allowing light to pour in—and feature individual classrooms with sliding glass doors that open up to a resource area to encourage collaboration and aid transparency.

Expansive upper and lower commons provide sweeping views and connect the academic stack to a state-of-the-art gymnasium and extensively renovated auditorium. A multilevel, open-concept library with accessible resource rooms, created by renovating classroom space and a gymnastics room, helps modernize the learning environment.

Attention to detail helped bridge important themes of the school. Interior design elements paired energizing colors and patterns with warm wood tones to unite the surrounding environment with the dynamic, social learning experience. The history of the school is showcased with an interactive, multidimensional display case, encouraging exploration and connection to the school’s and community’s past.
