Pittsburgh Science & Technology Academy

Pittsburgh Public Schools set out to create Pittsburgh Science & Technology Academy as a magnet school that would serve as a model for team-oriented community learning and teaching in a high-tech, studio-like environment. Exposed building systems, glass mechanical chases and floating suspended ceilings adorn the high-tech labs, classrooms and corridors of this state-of-the-art facility.

The adaptive reuse of an existing 85-year-old building revolved around a design that would embody the progressive ideas of the academy. As students progress from sixth to 12^th grade, they will simultaneously move vertically through a "business model" curriculum and the four-story building. Plinths of color create object-like entrances into labs, classrooms and major spaces. Transparent walls divide lab spaces to promote student interaction and team-teaching. Museum/cafe-like study areas open to the corridor, and serve as overflow teaching and planning space.

All of the spaces in the building, including art and music media centers, planning centers and public spaces, have access to a robust 10-gigabit wireless Ethernet.
